Ken Griffey Jr. sign 89 of his 1989 rookie cards and include the

When people are doing good things for the hobby we try to acknowledge them
in some way. One guy who fits this description is Jeremy Porter over at
www.portersprospects.com. Jeremy has quickly become a must
read blog for anyone who's interested in baseball card prospects.
We recently sent him a box of 2008 Bowman Chrome Baseball for him to bust
open and review for his readers. He was kind enough to pass the review on
to us (see below) with some very nice comments too - thanks Jeremy!
I received a surprise package in my mailbox today from my good friend Darcy at
Sports Card Fun. To my delight, a factory sealed box of 2008 Bowman Chrome
rested securely inside of it. Immediately after its release, I ripped a case of
this product with John Sandstrom of Rainout Cards and posted the results on
Beckett’s blog as well as my own. A Phil Hughes/Joba Chamberlain dual auto and
Angel Villalona auto redemption were the biggest hits of the lackluster case,
leaving John and myself feeling dissatisfied.
I was curious to see if my luck would change with this box and, as luck would
have it, indeed it did…
Autograph: Lars Anderson Refractor #19/500 **odds 1:88 packs**
• Lars had a dynamite season at two levels for Boston this year hitting
.317 with 18 HR 80 RBI and 85 runs scored. Additionally, he exhibited sterling
plate discipline drawing 75 walks. At 6-4 215 lb., Anderson should develop much
more power as he ages. Anderson just turned 21 and he figures prominently in
the post-Manny future of the Red Sox. Aside…please wear #19 as a Red Sock…
Orange Refractor: Chris Nash #9/25 **odds 1:785 packs**
• Nash is a 1B prospect with the Cleveland Indians organization. At 6-4
230 lb., Nash was lauded on the back of his card as containing an intriguing
blend of size, athleticism, and natural hitting ability. His season 2008 begs
the different. Nash batted .230 with the Low-A Lake County Captains with 5 HR
and 38 RBI. Nash had difficulty working counts as his 22 BB/82K ratio in 74
games shows that he has a raw knowledge of the strike zone. I’ll cut Nash some
slack as he is just 21 and should fare better in a second audition with Lake
County.
X-Fractor: Brandon Laird #126/250 **odds 1:79 packs**
• Anyone who has read my prospect blog with any regularity knows that I
like what Yankees 1B prospect Brandon Laird has done this year. Laird hit .273
with 23 HR and 86 RBI in the middle of a talented Low-A Charleston Riverdogs
lineup that featured other future stars Jesus Montero, Austin Romine and Bradley Suttle.
Laird has good bloodlines, with his brother Gerald being a solid
catcher for the Rangers, and his 40BB/86K ratio is acceptible. A knock on Laird
has been his general lack of athleticism and fielding agility, though the
Yankees have shown a tolerance for substandard gloves at 1B in the past. Expect
Laird to start at High-A Tampa next season.
Refractor: Pedro Baez #217/500 **odds 1:40 packs**
• Baez is a very young, very talented, and very raw 3B prospect for the
L.A. Dodgers. Baez began this season at Low-A Great Lakes where he couldn’t hit
his weight (and he’s not very heavy). Baez batted .178 with 1 HR and 16 RBI in
185 AB. Naturally, he was demoted to short season Ogden where he fared much
better, hitting .267 with 12 HR 50 RBI and 30 doubles. Baez has intriguing
power potential and his 6-2 200 lb. frame suggests that he can develop into a
20-25 HR hitter at the major league level. His plate discipline will be what
makes or breaks him. Baez struck out 114 times while drawing 35 BB.
Pedro is only 20 years old and has the tools to be a very good player at the major
league level, though he is a few years away. I expect to see Baez at Great
Lakes again with much more successful results.

• Refractors (7): Daisuke Matsuzaka, Alex Gordon, Jermaine Dye, Gil Meche,
Roy Oswalt, Carlos Zambrano, Kelly Johnson
How can I be dissatisfied with this box? After examining the projected odds, it
seems that I came out ahead in each category. Normally, there is one gold or
orange refractor per case. Lars Anderson is the toast of this set and receiving
a refractor version of his auto is a “box-maker”. I hope you enjoyed my
breakdown of this 2008 Bowman Chrome box.

FUKUDOME NON-AUTOGRAPHED ERROR CARD
Topps announces it inadvertently inserted a Bowman Chrome Kosuke Fukudome
Autographed Rookie Card (which is not autographed) into packs of the
recently-released 2008 Bowman Chrome Baseball. A total of 1900 copies were
issued. Fukudome is not a subject on the Autographed Rookie Card checklist nor
was he ever solicited as one.
Fukudome’s Rookie Card is featured on a Bowman Chrome Base Card and the
following parallels: Refractor, X-Fractor (#’d to 250), Blue Refractor (#’d to
150), Gold Refractor (#’d to 50), Orange Refractor (#’d to 25), Red Refractor
(#’d to 5) and Superfractor (1 of 1).

Here's a quote from the Beckett blog that has inspired a bit of a fire storm
of comments "In the more than 10 years since the history-making advent
of the memorabilia card, there have been 416,739 memorabilia cards produced, an
average of 34,728 cards per year, since 1996." Most of the people commenting
feel strongly that this number is way to high and manufactures need to cut back
